Action Verbs

An action verb, also known as a doing verb, expresses an action.

          We studied at the library.

           They danced all night.

           Tobias likes to watch movies.

           Jamila plays tennis.

Unlike action verbs, linking verbs do not

express action.

We are students at Saint Paul College.

            She is smart and funny.

Action verbs can be transitive or intransitive.  A transitive verb has a direct object; an intransitive verb does not have a direct object.

Willie rode his bicycle.    (the verb is transitive)

They arrived late.         (the verb is intransitive)
