           Appositives

An appositive is a  noun  or a  noun phrase  (or anything that functions as a noun) that renames another noun right next to it.


An appositive can rename a  subject.

      My car, a 1992 Toyota, continues to run perfectly.

      A 1992 Toyota, my car continues to run perfectly.


An appositive can rename a  direct object

      Omar and Jeavette bought their first house,a bungalow near Lake                  Nakomis.


An appositive can rename an  indirect object.

      Everyone in the office threw Anton, my boss's administrative assistant, a

      retirement party.


An appositive can rename an object of a prepositional phrase.

      We climbed to the top of Mount Elbert, the highest mountain in Colorado.
