       Intransitive Verbs

An intransitive verb is an action verb that does not have a direct object.   Some action verbs can be intransitive or transitive.  If there is no direct object, the verb is intransitive.  If there is a direct object, the verb is transitive.

We ate at home.            Because there is no direct object, ate is intransitive.

We atechicken.             Because there is a direct object, ate is transitive.

Thor drove to Nevada.       Because there is no direct object, drove is intransitive.

Thor drove his truck.        Because there is a direct object, drove is transitive.

Some action verbs are always intransitive because they cannot have a direct object.  However, they can be modified by other words or phrases.

Shelly arrived at seven in the morning.

Jermaine goes to the University of Minnesota.

My brother lied about when he went to bed.

Mrs. Anderson sits on her porch every evening.
