An intransitive verb is an action verb that does not have a direct object. Some action verbs can be intransitive or transitive. If there is no direct object, the verb is intransitive. If there is a direct object, the verb is transitive.
We ate at home. Because there is no direct object, ate is intransitive.
We atechicken. Because there is a direct object, ate is transitive.
Thor drove to Nevada. Because there is no direct object, drove is intransitive.
Thor drove his truck. Because there is a direct object, drove is transitive.
Some action verbs are always intransitive because they cannot have a direct object. However, they can be modified by other words or phrases.
