The predicate of a sentence includes the main verb and any words that modify it.  

--The researcher discovered a problem with the experiment.

--I walk to the park and back every day before going to work.

--The new professor gave an interesting lecture

If the main verb of the predicate is transitive, the predicate must include a direct object.

--My sister raked the yard.

--Willard wants a new bike.   

If the main verb of the predicate is a linking verb, the predicate must include a predicate adjective or a predicate nominative.

--Sammy isangry about her grade.

--We werechampions last year.
