        Subordinating Conjunctions

Subordinating conjunctions, also known as dependent words, begin dependent clauses, connecting them to independent clauses to create complex sentences.                     .        

Subordinating conjunctions that show contrast:

although

even though

though

whereas

in spite of the fact that


Example: Although Santos is a great student, his brother hates school.

             Lisa went to the concert with her friends in spite of the fact that she doesn't like the band.


Subordinating conjunctions that show time or sequence:

after

before

since

until

when

whenever

while


Examples:  You will not succeed until you try harder.

               When Joe finishes dinner, he plans to meet his friends for a game of basketball.

                Before the school year began, she had gone to the pool almost every day. 


Subordinating conjunctions that show cause:

if

as long as

unless

because

since


Examples: If we win tonight's game, we will advance to the playoffs.

             Unless we win tonight's game, we will not advance to the playoffs.

             We will play in the playoffs because we won tonight's game.


Subordinating conjunction that shows effect:

so that


Example:  We need to win tonight's game so that we can advance to the playoffs.
