Transitional expressions highlight the relationship between ideas. Typically, transitional expressions come before an independent clause that relates to a previous idea.
Example: Isaac exercises regularly; therefore, he is in good shape.
As the example shows, when a transitional expression comes before an independent clause, the transitional expression is followed by a comma.
